Not sure how, but looks like Wisconsin bested Nebraska by tie-breaker for the division title, and the all important bye week.

Upon the playoff announcement, Nebraska athletic offices looked much like it did in 1978.

In Tom Osborne's 6th year as head coach, his Nebraska team finally beat rival Oklahoma in 1978 and received the automatic Orange Bowl bid as the Big 8 Champion. As a reward for getting the Barry Switzer monkey off his back, Osborne's Nebraska team was given this surprise by the Orange Bowl Committee:

I always thought it was unfair when the "Big" schools scheduled games with 2nd tier or lower schools, that didnt have anywhere near the strength in their programs. Whenever one of the little guys beat a big guy, I liked it. One of the best upsets of all time is when Appy St knocked off Michigan in 2007, blocking the winning FG attempt.

Am always very interested in how a school/football team improves dramatically, especially those schools/teams that rise from relative obscurity and status in a college football world that is dominated by the "Bigs". The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers is one of those teams and here's a link to a very good article on the subject. https://www.golongtd.com/p/rising-tide-how-coastal-carolina Their success is as uncommon as their team name and logo, lol. Another point of interest is wondering whether or not the HC, Chadwell will forego offers from any of the "Bigs" to take over their programs. If I had to bet, I would bet that he would take the $.

How incredible was the "Miracle in Miami", when Doug Flutie threw the Hail Mary to his roomate, Gerald Phelan to beat heavy favorite Miami in 1984. Miami, with Bernie Kosar at QB, had taken the lead in an amazing offensive game, 45-41, and kicked off with 28 seconds left to play, then the Miracle was performed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sHS3Uhp1T1g

One of my favorite football memories was going to the grandparents on Thanksgiving and watching football on TV all day, lol. They would set me up in a comfy room (I was the only one into football) and I would get all the cokes that I wanted (in classic bottle), and snacks, then a great turkey dinner.
I remember the great games between Oklahoma and Nebraska in the late 60s and the Thanksgiving "Game of the Century" in 1971 (both teams were ranked 1 and 2), Names like Jerry Tagge, Johnny Rodgers, Rich Glover, Jeff Kinney for the Huskers and Selmon, Greg Pruitt, Jack Mildren, Steve Owens (67/68), Joe Washington.

“We would rather slide bare-*** on a razor blade,” Rodgers told SI Sooners, “than disappoint Coach (Bob) Devaney and Tom Osborne.”

“A lot of time has passed,” OU defensive line legend Lucious Selmon told SI Sooners, “and still yet, a lot of people remember that game (1971). Just unbelievable.”

If my memory serves me right, Johnny Rodgers had a great kick return in that one! I was a big Sooners fan!
